The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of New Mexico has announced a major victory in the fight against financial fraud, securing $4.9 million for victims of the Ayudando Guardians embezzlement scheme.
This decade-long scheme targeted vulnerable individuals under guardianship and resulted in substantial losses. The U.S. Department of Justice, through relentless efforts, has managed to recover a significant portion of the stolen funds for those affected.
The recovery came from a settlement with Travelers Casualty and Surety Company of America, which faced a civil action filed by the United States for coverage under their “Wrap + Crime” policy. The court ruled in favor of the U.S., compelling Travelers to pay $4.9 million.
In addition to the settlement, the U.S. District Court entered a final order of forfeiture on July 17, 2025, awarding an additional $4.9 million from funds obtained through this process.
The criminal case against the masterminds behind Ayudando Guardians was equally severe. The former president and majority owner, Harris, received a 47-year prison sentence with three years of supervised release. Her husband, William S. Harris, got a 15-year term followed by three years of supervision. Others involved were also handed lengthy sentences.
This recovery marks a significant milestone in the justice system’s fight against white-collar crime and financial exploitation, ensuring that those who have suffered due to such schemes receive some measure of closure and compensation.
