It’s a grim tale of gun violence and brazen defiance in Silver City as 25-year-old Dominic Carbajal faces federal charges for a string of crimes that left law enforcement officials baffled. The man they once considered a free man due to prior felony convictions is now staring down the barrel of a potential 27-year prison sentence.
Carbajal’s troubles began on June 25, 2024, when Silver City police officers responded to reports of an armed man at a residence. They found Carbajal with a loaded magazine and a stolen pistol, all while prohibited from possessing firearms due to his criminal past.
Just over a year later, Carbajal struck again. This time, he was caught on surveillance video during an armed robbery at a local nutrition store. The suspect pointed a black handgun at the owner before making off with stolen goods and fleeing in a car.
In March 2025, Carbajal committed a chilling act of violence by carjacking a man at a parking lot. He demanded keys, struck his victim, and threatened to shoot if he didn’t comply. With the stolen SUV, Carbajal vanished until officers tracked him down. During the arrest attempt, Carbajal unleashed two pit bulls on law enforcement before being subdued with a Taser.
Carbajal is now charged with interference with commerce by robbery, carjacking, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, and using a firearm during a crime of violence. His downfall was swift but the consequences he faces are severe if convicted.
The investigation was a collaborative effort between the FBI Albuquerque Field Office’s Las Cruces Resident Agency and local law enforcement agencies, including the Silver City Police Department and Grant County Sheriff’s Department. Assistant U.S. Attorney James Dickens is now prosecuting the case against Carbajal.
