Dax Baldrige, Assault of a Federal Officer, Illinois 2022

EAST ST. LOUIS, Ill. – Dax Baldrige, 47, of St. Elmo, Illinois, will spend the next 32 years in federal prison after unleashing a hail of gunfire on law enforcement officers executing an arrest warrant at his Fayette County residence. Baldrige pleaded guilty in January to a slew of charges including seven counts of assault of a federal officer, two counts of using a firearm during a crime of violence, and one count of possession of a firearm by a felon. He’ll add another five years of supervised release to his sentence after he’s served his time.

The October 17, 2022, incident unfolded when members of the U.S. Marshals Service attempted to serve Baldrige with an arrest warrant. After announcing their presence and affording Baldrige the opportunity to surrender, officers began to enter the residence. That’s when Baldrige opened fire, utilizing a stolen short barrel rifle loaded with 60 rounds of ammunition. The gunfire came through the wall of the home, narrowly missing multiple agents who were forced to retreat. Thankfully, no officers were injured in the brazen attack.

“Law enforcement officers are brave, underappreciated, and underpaid heroes who risk their lives every day to protect others,” stated U.S. Attorney Steven D. Weinhoeft. “Those, like Dax Baldrige, who target our officers for violence represent a form of evil against the very foundation of society. Few things are as serious, and our office will bring the full weight of federal law to bear, relentlessly pursuing the harshest prison terms to hold such people accountable.”

The initial volley of gunfire prompted a more than ten-hour standoff as Baldrige barricaded himself inside the residence. Once apprehended, a search of Baldrige’s property revealed a disturbing arsenal: nine firearms in total, including six rifles, a revolver, and two pistols, along with a substantial amount of ammunition. The incident highlighted the ever-present dangers faced by those sworn to uphold the law.

U.S. Marshal David C. Davis lauded the collaborative effort of multiple agencies, stating, “We are pleased that this case has been adjudicated… We want to thank the Illinois State Police, the ATF, and all our partner agencies… This case continues to illustrate the inherent dangers of this profession, and we continue to be grateful that none of our task force members were injured during the arrest of Baldrige.” ATF Special Agent in Charge Christopher Amon echoed that sentiment, emphasizing Baldrige’s “blatant disregard for human life.”

The investigation involved the U.S. Marshal Service Great Lakes Task Force, the Bureau of Alcohol Tobacco and Firearms, the Illinois State Police, the FBI Springfield TOC West Task Force, and the Fayette County Sheriff’s Department. Assistant U.S. Attorney Kimberly Arshi successfully prosecuted the case. As Illinois State Police Director Brendan F. Kelly put it, “When law enforcement officers…are literally fired upon…those individuals must be held accountable.” The sentence delivered to Dax Baldrige serves as a stark warning: attacking those who protect our communities will not go unpunished.
