Glen Adkins Jr. and Warren F. Tonsing Jr. Sentenced for Wire Fraud and Money Laundering

Telemarketing Scam

CHARLOTTE, NC – In a shocking case of wire fraud and money laundering, two North Carolina men have been sentenced to a combined 444 months in prison for their roles in a $4 million telemarketing scam that targeted thousands of elderly victims.

Glen Adkins Jr., 43, of San Diego, California, was sentenced to 300 months in prison, while Warren F. Tonsing Jr., 43, of St. Paul, Minnesota, received 144 months. Both defendants were ordered to pay $2.4 million in restitution, joint and several with their co-defendants.

The scam, which was carried out by a Costa Rica-based call center, involved deceiving victims into believing they had won a large monetary prize in a ‘sweepstakes contest.’ The victims were then tricked into wiring thousands of dollars to Costa Rica for a purported ‘refundable insurance fee.’

To date, 46 defendants have been convicted in the Western District of North Carolina for their participation in similar Costa Rican telemarketing schemes. The cases were investigated by a multi-agency task force composed of the U.S. Postal Inspection Service, FBI, Internal Revenue Service, Federal Trade Commission, and Department of Homeland Security.

Assistant Attorney General Leslie R. Caldwell and U.S. Attorney Anne M. Tompkins made the announcement after U.S. District Judge Robert J. Conrad Jr. imposed the sentences. The cases are being prosecuted by Senior Litigation Counsel Patrick M. Donley and Trial Attorneys William H. Bowne of the Criminal Division’s Fraud Section.
