Kansas City crook Craig Monks got four years in the can after getting caught with a hot gun. The 48-year-old was stopped for expired tags in Independence on October 2, 2024, and a cop spotted a Beretta pistol lodged between the driver’s seat and center console.
Monks claimed the gun was his, and when the cop ran his background, he found the Felon-in-Possession flag waving. In a subsequent interview, Monks downplayed the law, saying it was a ‘dumb’ rule. Newsflash, Craig: it’s the law.
Assistant US Attorney Trey Alford says Monks knew better, but just didn’t care. ‘It is against federal law for a convicted felon to knowingly possess a firearm,’ Alford said.
The Independence Police Department and Kearney PD helped crack this case. Operation Take Back America, a nationwide anti-cartel initiative, is also credited with bringing Monks to justice.
‘This case is part of Operation Take Back America, a nationwide initiative that marshals the full resources of the Department of Justice to repel the invasion of illegal immigration, achieve the total elimination of cartels and transnational criminal organizations, and protect our communities from the perpetrators of violent crime,’ the US Attorney’s Office said.
