LITTLE ROCK — Forty-one convicted felons are facing federal prosecution for illegally possessing firearms and trafficking drugs in a sweeping crackdown under the Violence Reduction Network (VRN) initiative, federal and local law enforcement announced today. These defendants, many with histories of violent crime including manslaughter, rape, and armed robbery, have been targeted in a coordinated federal-local operation aimed at dismantling the backbone of gun violence in Pulaski County.
The indictments, returned over the past six months, stem from joint investigations by the ATF, FBI, DEA, U.S. Marshals, Little Rock and North Little Rock police departments, and the Sixth Judicial District Prosecuting Attorney’s Office. Each defendant is a prohibited person under federal law due to prior felony convictions. At least 40 of the 41 face federal firearms charges, including felon in possession of a firearm or ammunition, possession during a drug trafficking crime, and unlawful possession while under felony indictment.
“The individuals targeted in our VRN initiative are among the most dangerous members of their community,” said Christopher R. Thyer, U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Arkansas. “Removing them and their guns from the streets of Pulaski County is a top priority, and makes our community a safer place to live.” Thyer emphasized that despite the scale of the takedown, law enforcement remains aggressively focused on rooting out ongoing sources of violent crime.
Jeffrey Reed, ATF Resident Agent in Charge, underscored the agency’s commitment to sustained collaboration. “The pursuit of justice concerning the judicial presentation of 41 defendants through the VRN initiative demonstrates the focus and commitment of the ATF to serve the citizens of the Little Rock and North Little Rock municipalities,” Reed stated. He reiterated ATF’s resolve to work alongside federal and local partners to dismantle networks of violent gun offenders.
Prior convictions among the defendants include aggravated assault, carjacking, residential burglary, domestic battery, delivery of controlled substances, and simultaneous possession of drugs and firearms. Several are also charged with standalone drug trafficking offenses, while others face enhanced penalties for using or carrying firearms during drug crimes. The VRN initiative, active in Little Rock since 2015, leverages federal resources to support data-driven, intelligence-led operations targeting the most prolific violent offenders.
Little Rock and West Memphis will remain VRN-designated cities through September, with federal agencies pledging continued operational support. “By no means are the law enforcement officers of this community finished,” Thyer warned. “We are coming for those who bring gun violence into everyday life.” The 41 cases are now proceeding in federal court, where convictions carry mandatory minimum sentences and decades behind bars.
