TYLER, Texas – Gregg County’s grim history with gun crime took another turn today as Kym David Pearce, a 51-year-old Longview native, pleaded guilty to federal firearms violations in the Eastern District of Texas. U.S. Attorney John M. Bales made the announcement.
Pearce, who stands accused before U.S. Magistrate Judge Judith K. Guthrie, admitted to having at least one stolen firearm among the eight seized during his arrest on May 20, 2012. The Longview residence at Virgie Street was the scene of a federal warrant execution that resulted in the discovery of the arsenal.
According to court information, Pearce’s possession of the stolen firearms came to light after a thorough search of his home, which also yielded several rounds of ammunition. His indictment followed on Oct. 3, 2012, by a federal grand jury.
The defendant is staring down up to a decade in federal prison for his transgressions. The sentencing date remains shrouded in uncertainty. This case is part of the Project Safe Neighborhoods Initiative, a collaborative effort to combat gun and gang violence in the Eastern District of Texas.
Investigating agencies included the Gregg County Organized Drug Enforcement (CODE) Unit, with assistance from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF). Assistant U.S. Attorney Jim Noble is handling the prosecution.
The initiative to make communities safer from gun-related crime includes not only local and federal law enforcement but also community members and organizations committed to restoring peace in the area.
