78-Year-Old Man Sentenced for Xanax Distribution

A 78-year-old man from Americus, Georgia, has been sentenced to 36 months of probation for his role in distributing Xanax.

Charles E. Peeler, United States Attorney for the Middle District of Georgia, announced the sentencing of Edward Lowell in a press release, stating that Lowell had admitted to distributing prescription pills in the community, which is still considered a form of dealing drugs.

A confidential informant, identified as CI, revealed to agents that she had received 10 Xanax pills from Mr. Lowell after a traffic stop and search of her vehicle revealed the pills. The informant estimated that she had received 8,000 pills from Mr. Lowell over the years.

Another confidential informant, CI-2, turned over 61 pills, including 8 Xanax and 53 Amphetamine/Dextroamphetamine, which she had recently purchased from Mr. Lowell for $150. The informant stated that she had been obtaining pills from Mr. Lowell for approximately ten years and estimated that she had gotten at least 10,000 pills over time.

Mr. Lowell waived his Miranda rights and admitted that he had obtained and distributed 100 pills per month over a two-year period to multiple individuals.

United States Attorney Charles E. Peeler commended the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office for their work on the case, stating, “Distributing prescription pills in our communities is still dealing drugs.”

The case was investigated by the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office, with Assistant United States Attorney Leah E. McEwen prosecuting the case for the United States.
