Defendant Sentenced to Federal Prison for Charleston Heroin Sales
CHARLESTON, W.Va. – Terrell Montaie, 31, of Detroit, Michigan, was sentenced today to 30 months in federal prison followed by three years of supervised release, announced United States Attorney Booth Goodwin.
United States District Judge Thomas E. Johnston imposed the sentence, which brings to an end a case that began with Montaie’s guilty plea in January 2015. Montaie admitted to selling heroin to a confidential informant working with the Kanawha County Sheriff’s Department in March 2014.
The sale occurred at a residence on Kay Lane in Charleston, where Montaie had been selling heroin in the area for a four-month period prior to the controlled buy. Montaie’s actions put the lives of numerous individuals in the Charleston community at risk, and his conviction sends a clear message that this behavior will not be tolerated.
This case is being prosecuted as part of an ongoing effort led by the United States Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of West Virginia to combat the illicit sale and misuse of heroin and prescription drugs. The U.S. Attorney’s Office, joined by federal, state and local law enforcement agencies, is committed to aggressively pursuing and shutting down illegal heroin and pill trafficking, eliminating open air drug markets, and curtailing the spread of opiate painkillers in communities across the Southern District.
The investigation into Montaie’s activities was a collaborative effort between the Kanawha County Sheriff’s Department and the U.S. Attorney’s Office. The case highlights the importance of working together to combat the growing threat of heroin and prescription drug abuse in our communities.
Montaie’s sentence serves as a reminder that those who engage in this type of activity will face severe consequences. The U.S. Attorney’s Office will continue to work tirelessly to disrupt and dismantle the networks of individuals who are responsible for the flow of illicit substances into our communities.
The case against Montaie is a testament to the dedication and hard work of law enforcement agencies in the Southern District. Their efforts have made a significant impact in reducing the availability of heroin and prescription drugs in our communities, and we will continue to build on this progress in the months and years to come.
