Cromwell’s Cocaine Empire Crumbles: Feds Nab Tribal Chief, Associates

Cocaine trafficking has claimed another high-profile victim: Cedric Cromwell, the former leader of the Mashpee Wampanoag Tribe. According to court documents, Cromwell, 68, of Mashpee, Massachusetts, orchestrated a massive cocaine trafficking operation, netting millions in profits.

The indictment, unsealed in the U.S. District Court for the District of Massachusetts, reveals a complex web of corruption that involved Cromwell’s associates, including David Dequattro, 52, of New Bedford, Massachusetts, and Carlton Hendricks, 45, of New Haven, Connecticut.

Prosecutors allege that Cromwell used his position as tribal leader to launder millions in cocaine proceeds through the tribe’s business ventures. The indictment charges Cromwell with one count of conspiracy to distribute cocaine, one count of conspiracy to commit money laundering, and five counts of money laundering.

Cromwell’s attorneys, Maksim Nemtsev and Jared C. Dolan, maintain their client’s innocence, citing a lack of evidence. However, federal investigators have seized over $1 million in cash, numerous real estate properties, and several luxury vehicles linked to Cromwell’s operation.

The charges carry a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison and a $1 million fine. Cromwell’s case is set to go to trial in the coming months.

The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Massachusetts has vowed to hold accountable those who abuse their power for personal gain. “This case is a prime example of the corrupting influence of crime and the importance of our office’s efforts to root out public corruption,” said a spokesperson.

Cromwell’s downfall is a significant blow to the Mashpee Wampanoag Tribe, which has faced numerous challenges in recent years, including a high-profile land-into-trust dispute with the federal government.

The Cromwell indictment is a stark reminder that no one is above the law, not even those in positions of power.
