Methamphetamine Offense Rocks Southern Illinois
A stark reminder of the devastating impact of the methamphetamine epidemic, a 24-year-old Carterville woman has been charged with conspiring to manufacture the highly addictive and deadly substance.
Morgan R. Harper, a resident of Carterville, was indicted on April 5, 2016, for a methamphetamine offense, according to a statement from James L. Porter, Acting United States Attorney for the Southern District of Illinois.
According to the indictment, Harper allegedly conspired with others to manufacture methamphetamine between 2013 and June 2015 in Jackson, Perry, and Randolph counties. The indictment alleges that this offense carried a maximum penalty of up to 20 years in federal prison, followed by 3 years of supervised release, and a fine of $1,000,000.
Harper appeared in federal court on April 19, 2016, where she was ordered held without bond pending a detention hearing scheduled for April 21, 2016. An indictment serves as a formal charge against a defendant, and under the law, a defendant is presumed innocent until proved guilty beyond a reasonable doubt to the satisfaction of a jury.
The ongoing investigation, led by the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office and Randolph County Sheriff’s Office, with assistance from the Jackson County State’s Attorney’s Office, has shed light on the alarming prevalence of methamphetamine in the region.
As the Grimy Times continues to expose the dark underbelly of the methamphetamine trade, we urge law enforcement agencies to remain vigilant in their pursuit of justice and to provide critical support to those affected by this devastating epidemic.
