In a brazen daylight robbery, a mischievous thief made off with a valuable prize in the heart of Pensacola. On October 28, 1906, a clever trickster targeted a Sunday morning promotion at the Pensacola Journal. Under the guise of a seemingly innocuous contest, the thief struck. The Journal had announced that the winner of a silver dollar would be randomly selected from the correct answers received at their office by next Thursday night. Furthermore, the second-place winner would receive a box of Huyler’s Candy from Dalembert’s Pharmacy. However, in a twist worthy of a penny dreadful, the Journal’s promise of a free trip out was the bait used to lure the unsuspecting public into a trap.
