New York – The grim narrative surrounding the death of Eric Davis on December 19, 2025, has taken a disturbing turn as Attorney General Letitia James released shocking body-worn camera footage from the investigation.
At approximately 10:23 p.m., two Rochester Police Department (RPD) officers responded to a break-in alarm. The encounter escalated rapidly when Mr. Davis, armed with a handgun, opened fire on the officers after they ordered him to show his hands. In the chaos, at least one officer returned fire.
Mr. Davis fled but was soon cornered by another officer who also exchanged gunfire before he was ultimately struck and killed. A fourth officer arrived and fired at Mr. Davis, declaring the scene.
The released footage, retrieved from four officers’ body cameras, presents a stark account of the deadly encounter that left three officers and one civilian injured. All have since been discharged from the hospital.
Attorney General James’ directive to release such footage is part of an effort to bolster transparency in law enforcement matters. The Office of Special Investigation (OSI) assesses every reported incident where a police officer may have caused death, whether on-duty or off, and armed or unarmed the victim.
The public disclosure of this footage comes under New York State Executive Law Section 70-b, which requires OSI to investigate when there is reasonable belief an officer’s actions may have led to death. However, it should be noted that this release does not imply any findings of guilt or innocence in a criminal matter, nor does it indicate whether charges will be brought against any individual.
