Jamel Middleton, Drug Trafficking and Illegal Firearm Possession, Florida 2022

ST. PETERSBURG, FL – Jamel Middleton, 27, of St. Petersburg, is facing over fifteen years behind bars after a federal judge handed down a hefty sentence for drug trafficking and illegal firearm possession. U.S. District Judge Virginia M. Hernandez Covington sentenced Middleton to 15 years and 8 months in federal prison, a consequence of his blatant disregard for the law and a history of violent offenses.

The bust went down February 17, 2022, when agents from the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), and the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office (PCSO) executed a search warrant at a St. Petersburg residence where Middleton was located. The search wasn’t a dry run. Agents uncovered a significant stash: 56.79 grams of 100% pure methamphetamine, along with 93.12 grams of fentanyl. Tellingly, the presence of mannitol – a common cutting agent – suggested Middleton wasn’t just holding, but processing for distribution.

The operation didn’t stop at narcotics. A loaded handgun was discovered hidden under a mattress in a bedroom. Nearby, agents found a folder clearly labeled “Middleton, Jamel.” Two rifles were located in the same bedroom closet. A black safe under the television yielded another handgun and a staggering 658.58 grams of pure methamphetamine, contained within six plastic baggies. The total haul speaks to a sophisticated, ongoing operation, not a one-off deal.

Middleton’s criminal history is extensive, including prior convictions for shooting at or within a building and selling controlled substances. This sealed his fate, rendering him legally prohibited from possessing any firearms or ammunition under federal law. The sentencing wasn’t just about the drugs seized; it was about a repeat offender continuing to endanger the community. The Court also ordered Middleton to forfeit approximately $7,500 in cash, an American Tactical semi-automatic rifle, a Norinco SKS semi-automatic rifle, a Springfield semi-automatic pistol, a Glock semi-automatic pistol, and assorted ammunition.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Samantha Beckman successfully prosecuted the case, highlighting the collaborative effort between federal and local law enforcement. The case falls under the umbrella of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a federal program designed to reduce violent crime and gun violence by fostering trust within communities and strategically prioritizing enforcement. The Department of Justice launched a strengthened PSN in May 2021, emphasizing community partnerships and measurable results.

The Middleton case serves as a stark reminder that those who choose to traffic drugs and illegally possess firearms will face severe consequences. The ATF and DEA, working alongside local agencies, continue to dismantle these operations and keep dangerous individuals off the streets. This isn’t just about taking guns and drugs off the market; it’s about disrupting a cycle of violence and protecting the public.
