SHREVEPORT, La. – Cassius L. Medlock, 32, of Many, Louisiana, is facing a long stretch behind bars after being sentenced to 188 months – fifteen years and two months – in federal prison for possession with intent to distribute crack cocaine. U.S. Attorney Stephanie A. Finley announced the sentence today, a grim reminder of the drug trade’s grip on the state.
The sentence was handed down by U.S. District Judge Elizabeth E. Foote on one count of possession with intent to distribute cocaine base. Beyond the prison term, Medlock will also serve four years of supervised release upon his eventual release. The case stems from a traffic stop on August 14, 2014, when Medlock was pulled over for speeding in Sabine Parish.
What officers found wasn’t just a speeding violation. A search of the vehicle revealed a substantial quantity of drugs: over 193 grams of crack cocaine, alongside marijuana. The discovery was made even more disturbing by the presence of six children inside the vehicle at the time. Details of their condition and care following the arrest have not been released.
Federal investigators revealed that Medlock’s arrest was part of a larger Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Force (OCDETF) Operation. This isn’t a lone bust; it’s a coordinated strike against a wider network. The OCDETF program, a collaborative effort between federal, state, and local law enforcement, aims to dismantle major drug trafficking organizations.
The DEA and the Sabine Parish Sheriff’s Office spearheaded the investigation, working together to build the case against Medlock. The OCDETF program prioritizes disrupting and dismantling these organizations, seizing assets, and targeting both regional and national-level drug traffickers. The program represents a substantial investment of resources in the fight against narcotics.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Seth D. Reeg prosecuted the case, securing the conviction and subsequent sentencing. Medlock’s guilty plea, entered on November 13, 2015, sealed his fate. This case serves as a stark warning: dealing in crack cocaine, especially with vulnerable children present, carries severe consequences under federal law.
