OMAHA, NEBRASKA – Aaron Craddock, 30, of Omaha is headed to federal prison after being sentenced today for being a felon in possession of a firearm. U.S. Attorney Deborah R. Gilg announced that Craddock received three years and one month behind bars from the Honorable Laurie Smith Camp. The sentence follows Craddock’s guilty plea on the charge, a violation that carries significant penalties given his criminal history.
The case stems from a routine traffic stop on December 2, 2015. Omaha Police officers pulled Craddock over on J.A. Creighton Boulevard for a simple failure to signal a turn. That minor infraction quickly spiraled into a major bust when a police K-9 unit alerted to the presence of narcotics in the vehicle. A search revealed a hefty ten pounds of marijuana stashed inside.
But the marijuana wasn’t the end of it. The discovery prompted officers to secure a search warrant for Craddock’s residence. Inside his bedroom, they found a Taurus .40 caliber handgun. Crucially, Craddock already had a prior felony conviction on his record – a fact that legally barred him from owning or possessing any firearms. The gun became the central focus of the federal charge.
Federal prosecutors didn’t mess around. The charge of being a felon in possession of a firearm is taken seriously, particularly in a city like Omaha grappling with rising gun violence. While the initial stop involved drugs, it was the illegal firearm that landed Craddock with a substantial prison sentence. The discovery underscores the link between prior criminal activity and continued illegal behavior.
Following his release from prison, Craddock will be subject to three years of supervised release, meaning he’ll be monitored by federal probation officers. This isn’t just about punishment; it’s about attempting to prevent recidivism, though the effectiveness of such programs remains a constant debate within the criminal justice system.
The entire investigation was handled by the dedicated officers of the Omaha Police Department. Their work, from the initial traffic stop to the execution of the search warrant, built a solid case that ultimately led to Craddock’s conviction and sentencing. This case serves as a clear message: possessing a firearm while being a convicted felon will have severe consequences in the federal court system.
