Justin L. Coleman, Felon in Possession of a Firearm, Nebraska 2021

Omaha, Nebraska – In a grim turn of events, Justin L. Coleman, aged 29, has been sentenced to 36 months behind bars for being a felon in possession of a firearm, announced United States Attorney Steven Russell. The sentence carries no parole under federal law, and upon his release, Coleman will serve a further three years of supervised release.

On December 8, 2021, Omaha Police Department officers responded to reports of a suspicious party at 27th and Fort streets. Arriving on the scene, they apprehended Coleman, who was found in possession of a Smith & Wesson Bodyguard .380 handgun. The firearm had been transported across state lines from Iowa to Nebraska and tested positive for DNA belonging to Coleman.

Before his December 8th arrest, Coleman had already been convicted of Attempted Burglary, knowing full well that he was prohibited from possessing a firearm due to his felony status. The case has been investigated by the Omaha Police Department in collaboration with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives as part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), an initiative aimed at reducing violent crime and gun violence.

Project Safe Neighborhoods was launched on May 26, 2021, to foster trust within communities, support violence prevention efforts by community-based organizations, establish focused enforcement priorities, and measure outcomes. The program targets areas most affected by gang-related crime, making neighborhoods safer for all.

This sentencing is a stark reminder of the consequences faced by felons who violate federal firearm laws. With this conviction, Justin L. Coleman has once again shown disregard for public safety, leading to a significant sentence and the loss of his freedom.
