OMAHA, NEBRASKA – Gilberto Aguilar-Beltran, 46, of Omaha, is facing serious time after a federal jury convicted him on January 27, 2023, of conspiracy to distribute and possession with intent to distribute methamphetamine, and possession with intent to distribute methamphetamine. The conviction marks a significant win for federal investigators who’ve been building a case against Aguilar-Beltran for over a year.
The investigation began on May 12, 2021, when Omaha Police officers observed Aguilar-Beltran, driving a Jeep Grand Cherokee, meeting with occupants of a black SUV at a Taco Bell on South 42nd Street. A male from the SUV entered Aguilar-Beltran’s vehicle, and the pair briefly cruised around before returning to the fast-food restaurant. After the male returned to the SUV, both vehicles departed. A subsequent traffic stop of the SUV revealed approximately one pound of methamphetamine, leading to the arrest of the SUV’s driver and passenger. This was the initial break in unraveling a larger drug operation.
Omaha Police detectives didn’t stop there. They dug deeper, gathering evidence linking Aguilar-Beltran to the methamphetamine distribution network. On July 15, 2021, officers executed a search warrant at Aguilar-Beltran’s residence, uncovering distribution quantities of methamphetamine, a substantial amount of cash, and tools of the trade – a digital scale and packaging materials consistent with large-scale drug trafficking. The raid confirmed suspicions and provided concrete evidence of his involvement.
But the scope of Aguilar-Beltran’s operation went beyond simple street-level dealing. Federal investigators, through collaborative efforts and a key cooperating witness, revealed a far more sophisticated network. Testimony revealed Aguilar-Beltran allegedly collected thousands of dollars in proceeds from methamphetamine sales on behalf of the organization. The cooperating witness painted a picture of Aguilar-Beltran as a key financial hub for the operation.
The most damning evidence came in the form of witness accounts detailing the use of Aguilar-Beltran’s detached garage as a regular off-loading point for dozens of pounds of methamphetamine. For several years, a “trap” car – repeatedly driven to Omaha from the southwest border – allegedly delivered the drugs to Aguilar-Beltran’s property. The methamphetamine was then destined for distribution throughout Nebraska. This reveals a clear connection to cross-border smuggling operations.
United States District Judge Brian C. Buescher presided over the jury trial and is scheduled to sentence Gilberto Aguilar-Beltran on April 27, 2023. The case was a joint effort spearheaded by the Omaha Police Department, the Drug Enforcement Administration, Homeland Security Investigations, and the Federal Bureau of Investigation. Expect a lengthy sentence given the scale of the conspiracy and the quantity of drugs involved. This case serves as a stark reminder of the persistent drug trade plaguing the Midwest.
