Maggie Elizabeth Sanders, Heroin Trafficking, NC 2015

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – A major drug bust in Charlotte has led to five arrests and federal charges against members of a suspected heroin trafficking ring operating in Mecklenburg County.

The United States Attorney Jill Westmoreland Rose announced the charges, stemming from an investigation that began in April 2015. The suspects, Maggie Elizabeth Sanders, Kevin Tyler Bell, Elyssa Breanne Shuford, Jamie Nicole McDaniel, and Joshua Dale Gregory, are accused of distributing heroin locally and beyond.

The federal indictment lists each defendant with one count of conspiracy to distribute and possess heroin. Additional charges against some include possession with intent to distribute and firearm-related offenses. Authorities also arrested 11 others on state drug charges.

Over ten kilograms of heroin were seized, along with five firearms, indicating a significant operation in the making. The drugs originated from Mexico’s Western District, shipped into North Carolina.

U.S. Attorney Rose emphasized the urgency of tackling heroin trafficking, noting its rising toll on overdose deaths. She credited multiple law enforcement agencies for their collaborative efforts in dismantling this criminal enterprise.

The suspects are currently in federal custody, awaiting initial appearances before U.S. Magistrate Judge David S. Cayer. Assistant U.S. Attorney Sanjeev Bhasker is handling the prosecution.
