TRENTON, N.J. – A Hunterdon County resident has been sentenced to 6 years in prison for his role in a disturbing child pornography case.
Daniel Murphy, 48, of Lebanon, New Jersey, was handed the sentence by U.S. District Judge Peter G. Sheridan in Trenton federal court after previously pleading guilty to receiving and possessing child pornography.
According to court documents, Murphy downloaded and possessed over 600 images of child sexual abuse from a peer-to-peer network on the internet between January 1, 2017, and November 20, 2019.
The disturbing images were discovered as a result of an FBI investigation led by special agents in Newark, under the direction of Special Agent in Charge George M. Crouch Jr.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Sarah A. Sulkowski represented the government in the case, which was brought against Murphy in the U.S. Attorney’s Violent Crimes Unit in Newark.
Aside from the 6-year prison term, Judge Sheridan also sentenced Murphy to 5 years of supervised release and ordered him to pay $19,000 in restitution.
U.S. Attorney Philip R. Sellinger credited the FBI for their work in bringing Murphy to justice, stating that the agency’s efforts are crucial in combating child exploitation and abuse.
Murphy’s case serves as a stark reminder of the importance of reporting suspected child pornography and other forms of exploitation to the authorities.
