Mehul Chandubhai Patel, a/k/a “Mike Patel,” 31, of Battle Creek, Michigan, admitted in federal court today to lying to U.S. Department of Labor investigators about repaying underpaid hotel staff—a crime that exposes a brazen scheme to skirt federal minimum wage laws. Patel pleaded guilty to concealing a material fact from the federal government, a felony charge stemming from his operation of two hotels in Battle Creek and Coldwater.
According to court records, in 2014, the Department of Labor found Patel in violation of minimum wage protections for his employees. He signed a legally binding agreement to repay the stolen wages. But when investigators demanded proof of payment, Patel submitted checks that made it appear he had made things right—while secretly forcing employees to hand the money back.
The deception didn’t last. Federal agents uncovered the shell game during a follow-up investigation, revealing that Patel had orchestrated a cover-up designed to mislead federal authorities while continuing to profit off underpaid labor. His actions not only violated wage laws but also obstructed federal oversight meant to protect some of the region’s most vulnerable workers.
Patel appeared before Magistrate Judge Ellen Carmody in Grand Rapids, where he formally entered his guilty plea. He now faces up to five years in federal prison, along with restitution and additional penalties. Sentencing will be determined by U.S. District Judge Paul Maloney at a later date.
The case was prosecuted by Timothy VerHey, Assistant U.S. Attorney, and investigated by a joint task force including the U.S. Department of Labor’s Office of Inspector General, Homeland Security Investigations, and the Battle Creek Police Department—an interagency effort highlighting the seriousness of labor exploitation in the hospitality sector.
This conviction sends a message: cheating workers may seem low-risk to some operators, but federal watchdogs are watching. Patel’s fall from hotel operator to federal defendant underscores the reach of labor enforcement—and the consequences of trying to outsmart it.
