New York Attorney General Letitia James has taken a stand against the Trump administration’s decision to terminate Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for Venezuelans. In a bold move, James co-led a coalition of 17 attorneys general in an amicus brief filed today in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California.
The program, established by Congress in 1990, is designed to protect immigrants from being returned to countries deemed unsafe due to armed conflict, environmental disasters, or other extraordinary conditions. TPS also allows eligible recipients to work legally in the United States.
“By eliminating TPS protections for Venezuelans, the administration is disregarding our fundamental American values and cruelly putting vulnerable families at risk,” James stated. The brief supports hundreds of thousands of Venezuelans living in the U.S., many of whom have established roots here.
New York alone is home to approximately 56,800 TPS holders. They contributed significantly to the state’s economy, earning $2.3 billion and paying $348.9 million in federal taxes. The termination of TPS would force families to face a harrowing choice: return alone, take their families into danger, or live in the shadows.
The coalition argues that the termination is unlawful and will cause irreparable harm to families, economies, and public safety. States like New York rely on the contributions of TPS holders, including Venezuelans, who are vital to the state’s economy and workforce.
Joining James in this fight are attorneys general from Connecticut, Delaware, Hawaii, Illinois, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Nevada, New Jersey, Oregon, Rhode Island, Vermont, Washington, and the District of Columbia. The battle for TPS is far from over, but with strong advocates like James at the helm, hope remains for thousands of Venezuelans seeking refuge in the United States.
