Michael Caraher, 28, of Morrisville, New York, is headed to federal prison for 90 months after being sentenced on charges tied to the distribution, receipt, and possession of child pornography. The conviction marks the end of a years-long investigation into a predator who weaponized technology to access and share some of the most disturbing illegal content imaginable.

U.S. Attorney Grant C. Jaquith and FBI Special Agent in Charge Vadim D. Thomas confirmed the sentencing, which took place in federal court in Syracuse. Caraher will spend the next seven and a half years behind bars, followed by a brutal 20-year leash of supervised release—ensuring federal eyes remain on him long after his release.

Chief U.S. District Judge Glenn T. Suddaby handed down the sentence after Caraher pleaded guilty in October 2017. During the plea, Caraher admitted to using a custom-built desktop to access child pornography sites, including those hidden on the anonymous ‘Tor’ network. He didn’t just consume the material—he actively traded it, using instant messaging apps to swap vile images and videos with other predators.

Investigators found that Caraher used peer-to-peer file-sharing software on a laptop to download more illicit content, storing over 100 videos and nearly 1,000 images of child sexual abuse across multiple external drives. Each file represents a child victim, a life scarred, and a crime meticulously archived by a man who treated innocence like digital loot.

The FBI led the investigation, peeling back layers of digital obfuscation to expose Caraher’s activities. Assistant U.S. Attorney Emmet O’Hanlon prosecuted the case, ensuring Caraher faced the full weight of federal law. The case was part of Project Safe Childhood, the DOJ’s nationwide initiative launched in 2006 to combat online child exploitation through coordinated federal, state, and local action.

Upon release, Caraher will be required to register as a sex offender—a permanent mark that follows him into any community he enters. The case serves as a grim reminder: behind every screen, someone may be exploiting children. And behind every investigation, federal agents are watching.
