Daniel Huzinec, 26, of Buffalo, NY, is going away for a long time—168 months behind bars—after being sentenced on federal charges of receipt of child pornography. U.S. District Judge Lawrence J. Vilardo handed down the sentence, which includes lifetime supervised release, marking the end of a sordid chapter in which Huzinec turned his role as an Assistant Scout Master into a cover for sexual predation.
The trouble began in December 2014 when law enforcement detected Huzinec sharing sexually explicit images of male children on a peer-to-peer file-sharing network. The digital trail led straight to his home in South Buffalo. On January 27, 2015, agents from Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) executed a search warrant, seizing a laptop and other electronics. Huzinec waived his Miranda rights and confessed on the spot—admitting he’d taken sexually explicit photos of a 16-year-old boy while chaperoning a Boy Scout camping trip.
Forensic analysis of Huzinec’s devices confirmed the worst. Investigators recovered multiple images and videos of child pornography, including the pictures he took of the sleeping teen. But it didn’t stop there. They found he’d also produced child pornography by exploiting another victim—a 15-year-old former member of his Boy Scout troop. In November 2014, Huzinec created a fake email account, posed as a teenage girl, and manipulated the boy into sending explicit photos. Those images were later found stored on his computer.
U.S. Attorney James P. Kennedy, Jr. didn’t mince words: “There is nothing honorable about sexually exploiting children.” Speaking from Buffalo, Kennedy emphasized that the Boy Scouts stand for duty and integrity—values Huzinec betrayed with every click and keystroke. “Today’s sentence should send a message to any child predator out there—if you do anything to hurt our youth, ‘be prepared’ to spend a long time in jail.”
Kevin Kelly, Special Agent-in-Charge of HSI Buffalo, underscored the depth of the betrayal. “This individual violated his position of trust with the Boy Scouts to exploit and take advantage of young boys under his supervision,” Kelly said. “The exploitation of children is reprehensible.” HSI’s dedicated child exploitation units, he added, remain relentless in tracking down predators who hide behind authority and uniform.
The case was investigated by Immigration and Customs Enforcement, Homeland Security Investigations, under Special Agent-in-Charge Kevin Kelly’s command. Assistant U.S. Attorney Stephanie Lamarque prosecuted. Huzinec now faces a lifetime under federal supervision—assuming he ever truly leaves prison. For the victims, justice arrived in shackles and a 14-year sentence. For the community, the scars run deeper than any verdict can erase.
