Sterling Jones, a 24-year-old from Lockport, NY, admitted in federal court to possessing child pornography—graphic material so vile it included prepubescent minors and violent depictions. Jones entered his guilty plea before U.S. District Judge Lawrence J. Vilardo, marking the end of a federal investigation that uncovered a digital archive of abuse stored on his cellphone and cloud account.
According to Assistant U.S. Attorney Jonathan P. Cantil, on March 31, 2017, Jones was found in possession of 295 videos and 11 identifiable images of child pornography. These files were discovered during a forensic sweep of his cellular device and linked to his Dropbox online storage, where investigators recovered over 600 illicit images. Many of the files showed children at their most vulnerable—prepubescent and subjected to violence.
The charges stem from a probe led by the Federal Bureau of Investigation under Acting Special Agent-in-Charge Kevin P. Lyons. Agents traced the digital footprints to Jones’ devices after uncovering encrypted files and metadata that placed the materials directly in his control. The investigation revealed deliberate, long-term efforts to conceal the material through cloud storage and device encryption.
Jones now faces a maximum penalty of 20 years in federal prison and a $250,000 fine. No plea deal details were disclosed, and prosecutors emphasized the severity of the material involved, calling it among the most disturbing seen in recent Western New York child exploitation cases.
U.S. Attorney James P. Kennedy, Jr., who announced the plea, reiterated the Department of Justice’s commitment to pursuing every lead in child exploitation cases—no matter how hidden the evidence. “This wasn’t just possession,” Kennedy stated. “This was the preservation of child sexual abuse, archived and saved by the defendant.”
Sentencing is set for June 11, 2018, at 10:00 a.m. before Judge Vilardo. If convicted at sentencing, Jones will be required to register as a sex offender for life. The case continues to serve as a stark reminder: in the digital age, no image disappears—and no predator is beyond reach.
