Two Californian kingpins face a harsher reality behind bars after being sentenced for their sinister plot to smuggle methamphetamine and heroin into Ketchikan, Alaska. According to U.S. Attorney Bryan Schroder, Arthur Castillo, 32, of Fresno, and Alfonso Francisco Sandoval, 32, of Clovis, were both handed down sentences today by U.S. District Judge Timothy M. Burgess. Castillo was sentenced to 11 years in federal prison, while Sandoval received a six-and-a-half-year term.
The duo pleaded guilty to drug conspiracy charges back in 2018 for their involvement in a trafficking scheme that spanned from June 2017 through October of the same year. Castillo’s role as a mastermind was pivotal; he orchestrated the distribution and collection of drug proceeds, even shuttling money down to California to fuel his operation. Sandoval, a trusted underling, helped transport drugs and served as a bodyguard at deals.
Court documents revealed that Castillo employed sophisticated shipping methods to funnel drugs into Ketchikan. His elaborate scheme involved assigning individuals to pick up packages or transfer cash to the suppliers in California. The investigation unearthed approximately 753 grams of meth, 75 grams of heroin, and an unspecified amount of marijuana intended for distribution in Ketchikan. Addicts in the town were nearly supplied with enough methamphetamine to sustain a quarter of their population.
Law enforcement’s relentless pursuit netted not only drugs but also $16,710 in drug proceeds and several firearms used to perpetuate their crimes. The DEA, Alaska State Troopers, and Ketchikan Police Department worked hand-in-hand to bring Castillo and Sandoval to justice. Assistant U.S. Attorney Jack S. Schmidt led the prosecution of this case.
The sentences handed down today are a stark reminder that drug trafficking in rural Alaska is no longer an isolated issue but a serious threat that demands federal attention. The grim realities of Castillo and Sandoval’s actions underscore the need for continued vigilance and law enforcement efforts to combat the drug crisis affecting communities across the nation.
