EDWARDSVILLE MAN PLEADS GUILTY TO TWO BANK ROBBERIES
In a shocking turn of events, Marcus J. Thornton, 37, of Edwardsville, Illinois, has pled guilty to two counts of bank robbery, leaving a trail of destruction and financial devastation in his wake.
According to court proceedings, Thornton’s first heist took place on October 13, 2016, at the Regions Bank located at 107 E. Schuetz Street, Lebanon, Illinois. Armed with a silver and black semi-automatic handgun, Thornton stormed into the bank, brandishing the firearm and demanding money from bank tellers.
The brazen thief made off with a staggering $13,710.90 in United States currency, which he stuffed into his pockets before fleeing the scene in a vehicle. Witnesses described the scene as ‘chaotic and terrifying,’ with several bank employees left shaken by the ordeal.
But Thornton’s reign of terror wasn’t over yet. Just over a year later, on February 9, 2017, he struck again at the U.S. Bank located at 400 South Lincoln Avenue, O’Fallon, Illinois. With the same silver and black semi-automatic handgun, Thornton once more terrorized bank employees, this time making off with $10,720 in United States currency.
Thornton’s arrest and subsequent guilty plea have brought a measure of closure to the victims of these heinous crimes. ‘This case is a stark reminder of the devastating impact of bank robbery on our communities,’ said United States Attorney for the Southern District of Illinois, Donald S. Boyce.
Thornton now faces a prison term of up to 40 years, a fine of up to $500,000, a minimum of five years of supervised release after his prison term, and an amount of restitution that is yet to be determined.
The case is being investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorneys Daniel T. Kapsak and James G. Piper, Jr. As the people of Illinois demand justice for these heinous crimes, one thing is clear: Marcus J. Thornton will be held accountable for his actions.
