New Orleans, Louisiana – A Kenner drug kingpin has been sent to federal prison for a staggering 60 months after being convicted of violating the Federal Controlled Substances Act and the Gun Control Act. James Callero, 33, was caught with his co-defendant, Dominic Lee, distributing heroin and using firearms to protect their drug trafficking operations.
Callero faced six counts in an indictment that also included various firearm offenses. He pleaded guilty to conspiring to distribute heroin and conspiring to possess firearms for the purpose of drug trafficking. The sentence includes 60 months behind bars followed by four years of supervised release.
This case is a part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), the Department of Justice’s initiative aimed at reducing violent crime. PSN, an evidence-based program, brings together stakeholders to address pressing community crime issues and develop effective solutions. The focus is on enforcing against the most violent offenders while partnering with local prevention and reentry programs.
U.S. Attorney Peter G. Strasser commended the efforts of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives in the successful prosecution. Assistant United States Attorney David Haller handled the prosecution for this case.
The sentence handed down today is a stark reminder of the consequences of drug trafficking and gun-related offenses in our community. Let this serve as a warning to others that such activities will not be tolerated, and those who engage in them will face severe penalties.
