Aaron Scott Midkiff, Methamphetamine Trafficking, West Virginia 2021

A Huntington man has pleaded guilty to a federal drug crime, marking yet another blow to the city’s growing methamphetamine problem. Aaron Scott Midkiff, 36, faced off with United States District Judge Robert C. Chambers, pleading guilty to possession with intent to distribute 50 grams or more of a mixture and substance containing methamphetamine.

According to court documents, on January 14, 2021, Midkiff was the passenger in a vehicle stopped by deputies with the Cabell County Sheriff’s Department. Deputies recovered approximately 166 grams of methamphetamine, which had been thrown out of the vehicle just prior to the stop. Midkiff also had digital scales and plastic bags in his possession, further indicating his involvement in the illicit trade.

The methamphetamine recovered in the case weighs in at a staggering 166 grams, a significant amount that underscores the severity of Midkiff’s crime. His plea deal comes with a mandatory minimum of five years in prison, a sentence that will be handed down on February 22, 2022.

Federal authorities credit the investigative work of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and the Southern West Virginia TOC-West Task Force for bringing Midkiff to justice. The task force, comprised of officers from the Cabell County Sheriff’s Department, the Hurricane Police Department, and the Marshall University Police Department, received support from the West Virginia State Police, the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), and the Violent Crime and Drug Task Force West.

‘This prosecution is part of an Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Forces (OCDETF) investigation,’ said United States Attorney William S. Thompson. ‘OCDETF identifies, disrupts, and dismantles the highest-level drug traffickers, money launderers, gangs, and transnational criminal organizations that threaten the United States by using a prosecutor-led, intelligence-driven, multi-agency approach that leverages the strengths of federal, state, and local law enforcement agencies against criminal networks.’

The case against Midkiff serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing battle against methamphetamine trafficking in West Virginia. Grimy Times will continue to follow this case and provide updates as more information becomes available.
