WILMINGTON, DE – Jaquez Williams, 28, of Wilmington, is heading to federal prison for 45 months after being convicted of two counts of being a felon in possession of a firearm. The sentence, handed down by U.S. District Judge Maryellen Noreika, underscores the escalating federal response to repeat gun offenders plaguing Delaware’s streets.
The trouble began September 23, 2020, when Williams was pulled over for a traffic violation. Cops discovered he wasn’t just breaking traffic laws – he was packing a loaded semiautomatic pistol despite already being a convicted felon. Released on bail for that offense, Williams apparently didn’t get the message. During a subsequent traffic stop, he was again found with another loaded semiautomatic. This wasn’t a first-time slip-up; court records reveal Williams has two prior convictions related to illegally possessing firearms.
U.S. Attorney David C. Weiss didn’t mince words. “Mr. Williams’ current offense and his history of illegally possessing firearms represent a clear and present danger to our community,” Weiss stated. “My office and our law enforcement partners will continue to devote unlimited resources to help stem the tide of gun violence. This sentence should serve as a warning to other repeat offenders who unlawfully possess firearms.” The feds are clearly signaling they’re done playing nice with those who repeatedly flout gun laws.
Wilmington Police Chief Robert J. Tracy echoed the sentiment. “This sentencing is yet another example of the stiff consequences faced by those who carry firearms illegally in Wilmington,” Tracy said. “We appreciate the continued partnership of the United States Attorney’s Office, working with our police officers and investigators to ensure strong prosecution of gun charges.” The collaboration between local and federal forces is proving crucial in tackling the city’s gun problem.
The investigation was a joint effort between the Wilmington Police Department and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF). Assistant U.S. Attorney Edmond Falgowski prosecuted the case, building a solid case against Williams based on the evidence collected during the two traffic stops. The case number is 21-cr-67, available on PACER and the District Court of Delaware’s website.
This isn’t just about taking one gun off the street, it’s about sending a message. In a city struggling with rising violence, the 45-month sentence for Jaquez Williams is a stark reminder that illegally possessing firearms, especially with a criminal history, carries severe consequences. The Grimy Times will continue to track federal prosecutions impacting communities across the nation, exposing the truth behind the headlines.
