WILMINGTON, DE – Raymere Broomer, 30, of Wilmington, is headed to federal prison for four years after a raid on his apartment turned up a cache of weapons and narcotics. Broomer was sentenced Thursday to 48 months behind bars for two counts of being a felon in possession of a firearm.
The bust went down January 12, 2022, when Wilmington Police executed a search warrant at Broomer’s residence. Officers found a loaded semiautomatic handgun on Broomer himself, and inside the apartment, they discovered a loaded assault rifle alongside a quantity of fentanyl. Broomer’s prior felony conviction made possession of the firearms illegal.
“Drugs and guns are a dangerous cocktail, which represent a danger to our community,” stated U.S. Attorney David C. Weiss for the District of Delaware. “My office and our law enforcement partners strive to identify and prosecute those contributing to illegal gun possession and violence in our community. This sentence serves as a warning to those who unlawfully possess firearms.” Weiss’ office led the prosecution, with Assistant U.S. Attorney Kevin P. Pierce handling the case.
Wilmington Police Chief Wilfredo Campos praised the collaborative effort. “This is another great example of the dedication of our police officers, who work each day to help make our City safer and hold gun offenders accountable,” Campos said. “I appreciate the support of the ATF and the United States Attorney’s Office in our efforts to send a clear message that illegal firearm possession will not be tolerated in our community.”
The investigation was a joint operation between the Wilmington Police Department and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF). The ATF’s Baltimore Field Division played a key role in building the case against Broomer, adding another layer to the ongoing federal push to stem the flow of illegal firearms onto the streets.
Court documents related to the case – Case No. 1:22-CR-56 – are available on the District Court for the District of Delaware website or through the PACER system. The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Delaware also maintains a public record of the press release on its website, www.justice.gov/usao-de. Broomer’s four-year sentence underscores the serious consequences facing individuals caught illegally possessing firearms in Delaware.
