KEYSTONE HEIGHTS, FL – Allen Tereal Grimes, 33, is facing a stiff federal sentence after being indicted on charges of possessing ammunition as a convicted felon. The Clay County Sheriff’s Office and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) busted Grimes after he was found with Winchester 9mm ammunition on August 11, 2023.
This isn’t Grimes’ first rodeo with the law. Far from it. The indictment reveals a staggering criminal history – seven prior felony convictions including battery on a law enforcement officer, resisting arrest with violence, fleeing and eluding police, felony battery, and even assault with intent to commit a felony. Federal law explicitly prohibits individuals with such a record from possessing firearms or ammunition, a rule Grimes allegedly ignored.
If convicted, Grimes could spend up to 15 years behind bars. The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Middle District of Florida isn’t stopping there. They’ve also filed a notice of intent to seize the ammunition as evidence tied to the alleged crime. Grimes made his initial court appearance on March 4th and was immediately ordered detained, meaning he’ll await trial from a jail cell.
U.S. Attorney Roger B. Handberg’s office is prosecuting the case, with Assistant U.S. Attorney Kevin C. Frein leading the charge. The government maintains that an indictment is simply a formal accusation, and Grimes is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. However, given his extensive record, authorities are clearly taking this case seriously.
The investigation is part of “Project Safe Neighborhoods” (PSN), a federal program aimed at reducing violent crime and gun violence by coordinating efforts between law enforcement and communities. The Department of Justice launched a renewed focus on PSN in 2021, emphasizing community trust, violence prevention, and strategic enforcement.
