TUCSON, Ariz. – In a stunning turn of events, David Quintero-Mascareno, 20, of Glendale, has been apprehended and charged with Knowingly and Intentionally Possessing with Intent to Distribute 400 Grams or More of a Mixture or Substance Containing a Detectable Amount of Fentanyl, a Schedule II controlled substance.
The complaint against Quintero-Mascareno alleges that on July 1, 2024, he presented himself at the Port of Entry in Lukeville, driving a gray Dodge Ram towing a trailer. He claimed to be returning from Puerto Penasco, Sonora, Mexico, and provided a negative customs declaration for contraband. However, a Customs and Border Protection (CBP) canine detected something amiss, leading to a thorough search.
CBP officers discovered approximately 234 packages containing blue pills imprinted with ‘M30’ concealed in the trailer’s floorboards and rails. A representative sample of these pills tested positive for fentanyl, totaling nearly 460 kilograms. The charges against Quintero-Mascareno carry a maximum penalty of life in prison, a fine of $10,000,000, or both, along with a five-year supervised release term.
It is important to note that a complaint merely charges an individual with criminal activity and does not imply guilt. The defendant is presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.
The U.S. Customs and Border Protection and Homeland Security Investigations are currently leading the investigation into this matter. The prosecution is being handled by the United States Attorney’s Office, District of Arizona, in Tucson.
