KC Man Gets 10 Years for Meth Trafficking, Gun Possession

Kansas City man Travis N. Black, 45, is headed to federal prison for ten years after being sentenced for possessing methamphetamine with intent to distribute and knowingly being a felon in possession of a firearm.

Black was sentenced by U.S. District Court Judge Stephen R. Bough to 96 months for possessing methamphetamine with intent to distribute and for knowingly being a felon in possession of a firearm. He was also sentenced to an additional 24 months for violating his conditions of federal supervision for a prior federal conviction for being a felon in possession of a firearm.

The Court ordered the sentences to run consecutively for a total sentence of 120 months in federal prison without parole. Black will also serve three years of supervised release following his incarceration.

The charges stem from a November 2023 traffic stop in Kansas City, Missouri, where officers observed a Ford Expedition that had been previously reported as stolen. Black was driving the vehicle with a female passenger when he crashed into some trees near 5519 North Cypress Avenue in an apparent attempt to evade officers.

During an inventory search of the wrecked vehicle, officers discovered a storage box containing approximately 70 grams of methamphetamine and a loaded revolver. The Kansas City, Missouri Police Department Crime Laboratory later analyzed genetic material taken from a swab of the trigger of the firearm and compared it to a known DNA sample taken from Black, finding a match.

This case is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Trey Alford and was investigated by the Kansas City, Missouri Police Department. The case is part of Operation Take Back America, a nationwide initiative aimed at combating violent crime and protecting communities from perpetrators.

Black waived indictment and pleaded guilty on February 13, 2025, to one count of possessing methamphetamine with intent to distribute and one count of knowingly being a felon in possession of a firearm.
