Bozeman’s Fentanyl Flood: Shante Anthony Gets 15 Years

MISSOULA, MT – A California man is headed to federal prison for flooding the Bozeman area with methamphetamine and fentanyl. Shante Maurice Anthony, 47, was sentenced today to 180 months – 15 years – in prison, followed by five years of supervised release, U.S. Attorney Kurt Alme announced. Anthony pleaded guilty in March 2025 to one count of possession with intent to distribute methamphetamine and fentanyl.

The case, presided over by U.S. District Judge Dana L. Christensen, details a sophisticated drug trafficking operation spanning at least two years. According to court documents, the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) began receiving credible tips in 2024 that Anthony was a primary source for meth and fentanyl in Bozeman and the surrounding Gallatin County. The DEA quickly discovered a pattern: Anthony, residing in California, repeatedly traveled to Montana, often combining mail shipments with personal visits to maximize distribution.

Informants described a meticulous operation where Anthony would ship drugs to Bozeman via the U.S. Postal Service, then fly to Montana to retrieve the packages and distribute the narcotics. DEA agents confirmed Anthony’s frequent travel, noting he made an average of two trips to Bozeman per month for a period of five to six months. The investigation zeroed in on a specific trip planned for November 2024. Anthony was preparing to travel to Bozeman the following day and had simultaneously dispatched a package suspected of containing narcotics.

On November 22, 2024, Anthony contacted the Postal Service to track the package’s progress. The DEA, working with a Postal Inspector, intercepted the parcel at the Bozeman Post Office. A search revealed a shocking cache: 1,000 fentanyl pills and a quarter-pound of methamphetamine. Further evidence, including text messages and recorded phone conversations, definitively linked Anthony to the drugs and confirmed his role as a distributor. The sheer volume of fentanyl alone points to a callous disregard for the lives of those addicted to, and potentially poisoned by, the deadly synthetic opioid.

The U.S. Attorney’s Office successfully prosecuted the case, with the DEA and the Missouri River Drug Task Force leading the investigation. This conviction is part of the Department of Justice’s Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a nationwide initiative aimed at reducing violent crime and bolstering community safety. PSN focuses on fostering trust with communities, supporting local violence prevention programs, prioritizing strategic enforcement, and rigorously measuring results.

“This sentence sends a clear message,” stated a source within the DEA who wished to remain anonymous. “Those who profit from poisoning our communities with drugs like fentanyl will face the full force of the law. We will continue to work tirelessly to dismantle these trafficking networks and protect the citizens of Montana.” More information on Project Safe Neighborhoods can be found at Justice.gov/PSN.
