CRYSTAL LAKE, IA – Jeremy Nedved, 42, is headed to federal prison for his role in a methamphetamine distribution conspiracy. The Crystal Lake resident was sentenced July 19, 2025, to 63 months behind bars after pleading guilty on January 6, 2025, to conspiracy to distribute methamphetamine.
The case unfolded after authorities discovered Nedved was leveraging the anonymity of the “dark web” – a hidden portion of the internet accessible only through specialized browsers like Tor – to procure methamphetamine. Between February and September 2024, Nedved allegedly used this platform to purchase the drug, which he then distributed to others. Law enforcement flagged suspicious activity in August 2024 when they learned Nedved was receiving controlled substances through the U.S. mail.
On August 29, 2024, a package destined for Nedved’s P.O. Box in Crystal Lake triggered a mail watch notification. A subsequent search warrant authorized interception of the package, revealing approximately a half pound of methamphetamine. The bust culminated in a controlled delivery on September 3, 2024, at the Crystal Lake post office. Nedved retrieved the parcel and was immediately arrested.
United States District Court Judge Leonard T. Strand handed down the sentence in Sioux City. Beyond the 63-month prison term, Nedved will also serve a three-year term of supervised release upon his release. The federal system does not offer parole, meaning Nedved will serve the entirety of his sentence. He is currently in the custody of the United States Marshals awaiting transport to a designated federal prison facility.
Assistant United States Attorney Patrick T. Greenwood prosecuted the case, with a multi-agency investigation led by the United States Postal Inspection Service, the Iowa Department of Criminal Investigation, and the Hancock County Sheriff’s Office. The successful operation highlights the continued efforts to dismantle drug trafficking networks utilizing modern technology and mail services.
