Cash Burch, Conspiracy to Distribute Ice Methamphetamine, Iowa 2019

Cash Burch, 35, of Des Moines, Iowa, orchestrated a sprawling methamphetamine operation while behind bars — and paid the price with a decade behind them. On May 17, 2019, Burch was sentenced to 120 months in federal prison for conspiracy to distribute ice methamphetamine, a scheme that pumped more than ten pounds of the drug onto Iowa streets.

Burch didn’t let a state prison sentence slow him down. While locked up on unrelated felony drug charges, he reached out, connected with dealers, and began coordinating the flow of ice meth. Evidence presented in court showed Burch used contraband phones and outside associates to maintain control, turning his cell time into a command center for distribution.

After his release, Burch didn’t step back — he escalated. He resumed direct involvement in the conspiracy, overseeing deals and deliveries that moved massive quantities of high-purity meth. The operation spanned multiple counties and relied on a network of enforcers, runners, and stash houses — all under Burch’s direction.

Chief United States District Court Judge Leonard T. Strand handed down the sentence in Cedar Rapids, adding an eight-year term of supervised release. With no parole in the federal system, Burch will serve every month. He remains in U.S. Marshals custody, awaiting transport to a federal penitentiary.

The investigation was a full-scale assault on organized drug networks, led by the Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Force (OCDETF). Agencies involved included the FBI, Iowa Division of Narcotics Enforcement, and multiple regional task forces — Tri-County, Mid Iowa, and Dubuque Drug Task Force — pooling resources to dismantle the ring.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Lisa C. Williams prosecuted the case. Court records, filed under 18-CR-2024, are accessible via the Northern District of Iowa’s electronic filing system. Follow updates from the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of Iowa on Twitter @USAO_NDIA.
