Council Bluffs, Iowa, is breathing a sigh of relief after Christopher Alan Durrett, 24, was sentenced to 130 months in prison for possession of methamphetamine with the intent to deliver and possession of a firearm by a prohibited person.
Durrett pleaded guilty to these charges on January 4, 2017, and admitted to possessing over 38 grams of methamphetamine that he intended to distribute. He also admitted to being in possession of a 9mm handgun with ammunition, despite being prohibited from possessing a firearm due to a previous conviction of misdemeanor domestic abuse assault.
The investigation was conducted by the Southwest Iowa Narcotics Enforcement Task Force, the Council Bluffs Police Department, and the Pottawattamie County Attorney’s Office. The case was prosecuted by the United States Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of Iowa.
United States Attorney Kevin E. VanderSchel announced the sentencing, which was handed down by United States District Court Judge Rebecca Goodgame Ebinger. Durrett will be required to serve five years of supervised release following his imprisonment.
The sentencing of Durrett is a significant victory for law enforcement and the community, as it takes a major player in the methamphetamine trade off the streets. Methamphetamine is a highly addictive and destructive drug that has ravaged communities across the country, and those who distribute it are a major contributor to the problem.
The Southwest Iowa Narcotics Enforcement Task Force and other law enforcement agencies have been working tirelessly to combat the methamphetamine epidemic in Iowa, and the sentencing of Durrett is a testament to their hard work and dedication. It is a reminder that law enforcement is committed to keeping the community safe and that those who break the law will be held accountable.
