Amarillo police busted a major methamphetamine operation on June 30, seizing 57 grams of the drug and two firearms from a motel room at the Traveler Motel. Mason Allan McCarty, 51, was detained and later indicted by a federal grand jury on July 23. The search warrant was executed after a tip led authorities to the motel, where they found McCarty with 28 grams of meth in his pocket.
Inside the motel room, officers discovered an additional 29 grams of meth, packaged similarly to the meth found on McCarty, as well as a Bersa .380 caliber pistol and a Ruger .22 caliber pistol. McCarty, who has multiple prior felony convictions, admitted to possessing the firearms and distributing around 28 pounds of meth over the last few months.
Federal law enforcement took custody of McCarty from state authorities on July 13, and he remains in custody pending further court proceedings. If convicted, McCarty faces a maximum possible penalty of life imprisonment. The FBI and the Amarillo Police Department conducted the investigation, with Assistant U.S. Attorney Anna Marie Bell from the Amarillo Branch Office prosecuting the case.
The indictment is a significant blow to methamphetamine trafficking in the Northern District of Texas. The case highlights the ongoing efforts of law enforcement to combat drug trafficking and reduce the availability of illicit substances in the community.
