Lewiston Man Pleads Guilty to Felon in Possession of Firearm

Lewiston native Kulmiye Abukar Idris, 35, has been hit with a major legal blow after pleading guilty in U.S. District Court to being a felon in possession of a firearm.

Idris’ transgression came to light during a routine traffic stop by Lewiston police officers back in January 2025. The officers discovered the illegal handgun while searching Idris’ vehicle, a discovery that would land him in hot water due to his prior felony conviction for gross sexual assault.

The consequences of Idris’ actions are severe. He now faces up to 15 years behind bars, a monetary penalty of $250,000, and three years of supervised release. His sentence will be determined by the U.S. Sentencing Guidelines after a presentence investigative report is completed by the U.S. Probation Office.

Investigations into this case were conducted by both the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) and the Lewiston Police Department, with additional support from the Androscoggin County District Attorney’s Office.

This case is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a program aimed at reducing violent crime and gun violence. The initiative brings together all levels of law enforcement to foster trust in communities and support organizations that prevent violence before it occurs.
