Bangor, Maine – A grim reminder of the harsh consequences for illegal firearm possession unfolded in federal court this week as 44-year-old Peter Poland was sentenced to seven years in prison and three years supervised release for his brazen act.
Poland, a resident of Whitefield, Maine, pleaded guilty on September 28, 2016, to being a felon in possession of a firearm. His downfall began in March 2016 when he burglarized a residence in his own town and made off with three firearms.
But the story doesn’t end there. At the time of the burglary, Poland was under strict prohibition from owning or possessing firearms due to a prior felony drug conviction. He was already on supervised release for that offense.
The court records revealed a chilling detail: Poland’s unlawful actions were not an isolated incident but part of a pattern of lawlessness. The investigation into his crime was a collaborative effort, led by the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) and the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office.
Promising a sentence that would serve as a deterrent to others, Judge John A. Woodcock Jr. sentenced Poland not only to seven years for being a felon in possession but also imposed an additional year and one day in prison for violating the terms of his supervised release.
