CHARLESTON, W.Va. – In a stunning betrayal of trust, Semiha Nilgun Gencsoy, 71, from Fort Lauderdale, Florida, was handed down a five-year federal probation sentence and ordered to pay $328,478.38 in restitution for her brazen theft of West Virginia public employee pension funds over 15 years.
Gencsoy admitted to the fraudulent receipt of pension benefits that did not belong to her, amounting to $328,478.38. Her deception began when she inherited her father’s pension after his death in 2007 and continued until June 2023. Gencsoy is also accused of failing to notify the West Virginia Consolidated Public Retirement Board (WVCPRB) or close their joint bank account after her mother passed away in 2008.
The judge’s stern rebuke followed a thorough investigation by the WVCPRB and the West Virginia State Police – Bureau of Criminal Investigation (BCI). Assistant United States Attorney Jonathan T. Storage prosecuted the case with vigor, ensuring justice was served.
Acting U.S. Attorney Lisa G. Johnston praised the diligent work of the law enforcement agencies involved, highlighting their commitment to protecting public funds and pensioners alike.
The sentence imposed by United States District Judge Thomas E. Johnston reflects the gravity of Gencsoy’s actions. Her case serves as a stark reminder of the importance of integrity in financial matters.
