Stuffed Animals Used as Drug Hides by Damien Duwjan Shade Convicted

MINNEAPOLIS – In a shocking turn of events, Damien Duwjan Shade, 48, was convicted by a federal jury following a two-day trial for hiding methamphetamine in stuffed animals. Shade was charged with one count of being a Felon in Possession of a Firearm and one count of Attempted Possession with Intent to Distribute Methamphetamine.

“Stuffed animals are symbols of childhood, not vessels for poison,” Acting U.S. Attorney Joseph H. Thompson stated. “This verdict ensures there will be consequences for those who peddle their lethal drugs under the guise of innocence.”

The investigation began in March 2023 when the Rochester Police Department intercepted three suspicious packages sent from San Diego to addresses in Winona, Minnesota. The packages contained six pounds of methamphetamine hidden inside toys. Law enforcement conducted a controlled delivery and arrested Shade.

During a search at Shade’s home, police uncovered more evidence of his drug operation. They found a revolver, drug ledger, and over 400 rounds of ammunition. Shade confessed to traveling to California to purchase the meth and shipping it back using fake names.

In 2013, Shade was previously convicted of being a Felon in Possession of a Firearm in San Diego. He will be sentenced at a later date, facing up to life in prison.

This case was investigated by Homeland Security Investigations, the Rochester Police Department, the Winona County Sheriff’s Office, and other members of the Southeast Minnesota Violent Crime Enforcement Team. Assistant U.S. Attorneys Lauren O. Roso and Syngen Kanassatega prosecuted the case.
