United States Attorney Alison J. Ramsdell dropped a重磅 on Dylan Sanchez, 33, of Rapid City, South Dakota, with a three-year and six-month federal prison sentence for Possession of Ammunition by a Prohibited Person.
The sentencing, which took place on September 29, 2025, was handed down by U.S. District Judge Camela C. Theeler. Sanchez also faces three years of supervised release after his prison term, and he must cough up a $100 special assessment to the Federal Crime Victims Fund.
Sanchez’s journey into federal prison began with a traffic stop on April 10, 2024, when law enforcement pulled him over for speeding in Rapid City. After failing a field sobriety test, Sanchez was arrested and his vehicle was searched. The inventory revealed over 200 rounds of ammunition, pistol magazines (including an extended one), cocaine, and distributable amounts of marijuana. His prior felony conviction made it illegal for Sanchez to possess ammunition.
This conviction is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a program aimed at reducing violent crime and gun violence across the nation. The initiative, which involves all levels of law enforcement and community members, was strengthened by the Department of Justice in May 2021 to include fostering trust, supporting preventive organizations, strategic enforcement, and result measurement.
The ATF and Rapid City Police Department investigated the case, while Assistant U.S. Attorney Benjamin Schroeder prosecuted it. Upon his sentencing, Sanchez was immediately turned over to the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service.
