In a scathing indictment of corporate greed, Royal Sovereign International Inc., a New Jersey-based company, has been sentenced to pay a staggering $8 million fine and $395,786 in restitution for its role in selling defective air conditioners that caused over 40 fires and one death.
The company, which also operated under the name Royal Centurian Inc., imported and sold over 33,000 faulty air conditioners manufactured in China between 2008 and 2014. The air conditioners were equipped with a defective drain motor that could short circuit, leading to devastating fires. Despite the risks, Royal Sovereign failed to report the defects to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) in a timely manner.
According to court documents, Royal Sovereign pleaded guilty in August 2025 to a criminal information charging the company under the Consumer Product Safety Act (CPSA). In its guilty plea, the company admitted to willfully failing to report information about the air conditioners to the CPSC, and even misled the agency in November 2010 by providing false information.
The company’s reckless disregard for consumer safety has finally been brought to light, and it will now face the consequences of its actions. The $8 million fine and $395,786 in restitution are a small price to pay for the lives and property lost due to Royal Sovereign’s negligence.
The case serves as a stark reminder of the importance of corporate accountability and the need for companies to prioritize consumer safety above profits. As the investigation into Royal Sovereign’s actions continues, it is clear that the company’s actions will have far-reaching consequences for the industry as a whole.
Royal Sovereign International Inc. was sentenced on April 28, 2026, in a New Jersey court. The company’s guilty plea and subsequent sentencing mark a significant victory for consumer safety advocates and a warning to companies that prioritize profits over people.
