Calvin Swinton, Fentanyl Trafficking, New Jersey 2024

NEWARK, NJ – Nine members of a notorious street gang have been charged with running a massive fentanyl trafficking operation in Essex County, authorities announced today.

According to court documents, Calvin Swinton, 32, aka ’40,’ Lance Yarbough, 42, aka ‘L-Boog,’ Jahad Gorsuch, 47, aka ‘Hadi Mu,’ Coyette Elliott, 56, aka ‘Q,’ Derrick Davidson, 55, aka ‘Lefty,’ Rashem Batts, 48, aka ‘Dae Dae,’ Kiion Scovil, 35, aka ‘Skrapp,’ Tishawn Scovil, 33, aka ‘Ty,’ and Amanda Brown, 32, aka ‘Manda,’ all of Essex County, New Jersey, were charged with one count of conspiracy to distribute fentanyl, heroin, and cocaine.

The defendants are accused of operating an open-air narcotics market in the areas of West End and 18th avenues and Alexander Street in Newark, according to court documents. The organization, which is affiliated with the Sex, Money, Murder set of the Bloods street gang, distributed over 400 grams of fentanyl, authorities said.

The investigation, which was led by the FBI, involved extensive surveillance of the area, controlled purchases of narcotics, and analysis of telephone records. The defendants face a mandatory minimum penalty of 10 years in prison, a maximum potential penalty of life in prison, and a $10 million fine, authorities said.

The investigation was conducted as part of the Newark Violent Crime Initiative (VCI), a partnership between federal, state, and local agencies aimed at combating violent crime in Newark. U.S. Attorney Philip Sellinger credited the FBI and other law enforcement agencies for their assistance in the investigation.

The defendants are scheduled to make initial court appearances before U.S. Magistrate Judge Cathy L. Waldor in Newark federal court, except for Elliott and Scovil, who are in state custody and will make their initial appearances at a later date.

The charges against the defendants were announced by U.S. Attorney Sellinger, who was joined by FBI Special Agent in Charge James E. Dennehy and other law enforcement officials.
