Ricky Terrell, a 24-year-old man from Newark, New Jersey, has been sentenced to five years in prison for possessing a handgun in furtherance of a drug trafficking crime. The crime occurred in Newark, New Jersey, and the sentencing took place on an unspecified date.
The investigation, which was conducted by the ATF, the Belleville Police Department, the DEA, the Newark Police Department, the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office, and the Essex County Sheriff’s Office, revealed that Terrell was involved in a conspiracy to distribute narcotics, including heroin and cocaine, in and around Stephen Crane Village in Newark.
On February 25, 2020, law enforcement officers searched Terrell’s residence and found heroin and cocaine, a Smith & Wesson .40 caliber handgun, and numerous rounds of ammunition. The evidence collected during the investigation led to Terrell’s guilty plea to a one-count Information charging him with possession of a firearm in furtherance of a drug trafficking crime.
Ricky Terrell, whose full name is Ricky Terrell, will also serve three years of supervised release following his prison sentence. The investigation was part of the Newark Violent Crime Initiative (VCI), a partnership between the U.S. Attorney’s Office and local law enforcement to investigate crime in Newark and the surrounding cities.
The Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Force (OCDETF) also assisted in the investigation, which aimed to disrupt and dismantle the most serious drug trafficking, weapons trafficking, and money laundering organizations in the country.
The government was represented by Assistant U.S. Attorney Tracey Agnew of the Organized Crime and Gangs Unit of the U.S. Attorney’s Office’s Criminal Division in Newark.
