Fentanyl Distribution Lands Las Vegas Man Behind Bars
A devastating case of fentanyl distribution has come to light in Las Vegas, Nevada. Daniel Anguiano, 42, pleaded guilty to distributing counterfeit oxycodone pills containing fentanyl and acetyl fentanyl, which ultimately led to the overdose death of another person.
According to court documents and admissions made in court, Anguiano distributed the deadly pills to the victim, who later succumbed to the fentanyl overdose. Fentanyl is classified as a Schedule II controlled substance, while acetyl fentanyl is classified as a Schedule I controlled substance. The potency of these substances is alarming, with fentanyl being 80-100 times more potent than morphine and 50 times more potent than heroin.
Acetyl fentanyl, on the other hand, is an analog of fentanyl that is 10-15 times more potent than morphine. Oxycodone, a semi-synthetic opioid, is a common drug of abuse. Anguiano’s actions have severe consequences, with the distribution of fentanyl and acetyl fentanyl carrying a statutory mandatory minimum sentence of 20 years imprisonment and a statutory maximum sentence of life imprisonment and a $10,000,000 fine.
U.S. District Judge Andrew Gordon has scheduled sentencing for September 13, 2021. Acting U.S. Attorney Christopher Chiou for the District of Nevada and Assistant Special Agent in Charge Daniel Neill for the DEA made the announcement. This case is the product of an investigation by the DEA, with Assistant U.S. Attorney Kimberly Sokolich prosecuting the case.
The distribution of fentanyl and acetyl fentanyl has far-reaching consequences, not only for the victim and their loved ones but also for the community at large. The severity of the sentence handed down to Anguiano serves as a stark reminder of the gravity of this crime.
In a statement, the authorities emphasized the importance of holding individuals accountable for their actions, particularly in cases involving the distribution of deadly substances. The community can expect continued efforts to combat the opioid epidemic and bring perpetrators to justice.
