Ronald Lopez, 29, of Albuquerque, is behind bars after allegedly robbing a bank in the city.
According to a criminal complaint, on March 25, Lopez entered the Rio Grande Credit Union on Rio Bravo Boulevard in Albuquerque, wearing a fur-lined coat and a face mask. He allegedly approached a teller and presented a demand note, claiming he had a gun.
Lopez then allegedly fled in a silver van, but investigators were hot on his tail. Later that day, they located the van at Lopez’s residence, where he was arrested.
The FBI’s Albuquerque Violent Crime and Gang Task Force investigated the case with assistance from the Bernalillo County Sheriff’s Office and the United States Postal Inspection Service.
Assistant United States Attorney Niki Tapia-Brito is prosecuting the case.
Lopez will remain in custody pending a detention hearing scheduled for April 1. If convicted, he faces up to 20 years in prison. A complaint is only an allegation, and a defendant is considered innocent until proven guilty.
This is a developing story, and we will provide updates as more information becomes available.
