A Monterey County man has been sentenced to 6 years in federal prison for distributing fentanyl-laced pills that killed a local resident.

Matthew Sanchez, 27, of Monterey County, California, was sentenced on February 8, 2023, by United States District Judge Edward J. Davila to 75 months (6 years, 3 months) in federal prison for distributing fentanyl-laced pills that killed a Monterey County resident.

The fentanyl-laced pills were called ‘M30s’ and were light blue in color with an imprinted ‘M’ on one side and ’30’ on the other.

Sanchez pleaded guilty to a conspiracy to distribute alprazolam and fentanyl and with the distribution of fentanyl on June 6, 2022.

In his plea agreement, Sanchez admitted that from June 2018 through October 2019 he conspired with others to sell, and did sell, counterfeit pharmaceutical pills containing fentanyl.

Sanchez also conspired to sell and sold bottles of alprazolam (U.S. brand name: Xanax) packaged as ‘Farmapram.’

The case was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorneys Christina Liu and Casey Boome, with the assistance of Mark DiCenzo, Linda Love, and Andy Ding.

The prosecution is the result of an investigation by DEA, with assistance from the Customs and Border Protection, Office of Field Operations; the Department of Homeland Security, Homeland Security Investigations; the Pacific Grove Police Department; Monterey County Sheriff’s Office; and the Monterey Police Department.

This prosecution is part of an Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Forces (OCDETF) investigation.
